In a recent interview, Maria Basescu, executive director, and Barry Stockwell, venue manager, talked about the creation of Next Stage when the church's congregation, no longer able to sustain the expense of maintaining the building, sold it for $1 to the Putney Historical Society in 2009. "The original idea came from the Historical Society," Stockwell recalled. "Somebody said, 'Why don't we talk to some of the artistic folks in Putney and possibly turn it into a performing arts center?' The first five founders were Eric Bass, John Burt, Billy Strauss, Chip Greenberg, and Stockwell. "We all had our own reasons to be interested in this possibility," Stockwell explained.
